by Fr. Anthony Coniaris Reviewed by Daniel Christopulos The brilliance of all of Fr. Anthony Coniaris' writing is found in his ability to take often complicated subjects and present them in an understandable way to his audience. This gift is on full display once again in his book, The Nicene Creed for Young People. Although originally published a few years ago, in a day and age when it seems that all truth is relative and especially our youth are bombarded with the notion that there is no right or wrong when it comes to faith, the importance of a book that helps us understand our basic Orthodox Christian tenants cannot be overstated. The twelve articles of the Nicene Creed are the basic Christian dogmas that demarcate those who accept and follow Jesus Christ from others who follow someone else or who might claim to follow Christ, but don't accept the Christian teachings handed down through Holy Tradition and Holy Scripture through the Apostles. Ideally suited for middle school and junior high aged students, it breaks down the twelve articles of faith into even smaller units and takes the time to explain the layers of meaning that they represent. Combined with the Study Guide, that is added as an appendix following the explanation of the Creed itself, it is an excellent tool for Religious Educators as well as parents who want to make sure that their children are equipped to understand our beliefs and combat the plethora of beliefs to which they will be exposed. My only disagreement with this offering is in limiting it to "Young People." Many times in church I have heard parishioners exclaim, "I got more out of the 'kid's sermon' today than from the 'adult sermon.'" I imagine that any adults who read Fr. Anthony's explanation of the Nicene Creed would express the same sentiment. Maybe by understanding that we are all "young" in our faith we will correctly apprehend that this writing will help us in grow in our Christian walk—and we won't be disappointed.
