God's Path to Sanity: Lessons from Ancient Holy Counselors on How to Have a Sound Mind
by Dee Pennock
Reviewed by Fr. Anthony Coniaris
It was brought to my attention recently that a European psychiatrist arrived in Greece recently and was welcomed like a rock star. Thousands of people attended his lectures on how to live their lives. This demonstrates that people are thirsting for spiritual direction and renewal, but they don’t know where to look for it. They flock to secular psychologists and psychiatrists to find meaning for their lives. This demonstrates also that many people in Greece and elsewhere either ignore or deem irrelevant the rich psychological tradition of the Church Fathers and saints of the church. The result is that many often turn to self-professed atheists for counseling about their psyche.
The book God's Path to Sanity by Dee Pennock was written to acquaint readers with the God-given physicians of the soul through the ages. The author describes how their holy counselors (saints, and Church Fathers) describe the psychological symptoms of the illnesses of the soul and how they can be healed only through spiritual means—through counseling in the Holy Spirit, the marvelous restorative grace of the Holy Spirit, and repentance which melts into love, and a renewal of life, which nothing else can give.
I highly recommend this book.
